Before I thought that Ripley's Believe It or Not was just a show on TV with that actor that plays as superman on that other show. But I didn't realize how world wide the name Ripley's Believe It or Not was and didn't know how much of money they made through advertising.

I came across this magazine cover when I was looking on the internet. It really stood out because of the images on the cover. It looked like some scary underwater stories and caught my interest. Especially the huge title "Believe it or Not!" True Ghost stories.

So the first thing I thought of when I saw the words Ripley's Believe It or Not was the host Dean Cain. The only other show I can remember this guy in was Superman in the TV series. But I never even thought that Ripley's Believe It or Not existed before Dean Cain. So, I have naturally link Ripley's to Dean Cain.

Modern Hieroglyphs

Before I read this article I didn't really notice the simple signs or modern hieroglyphs that are all around us. It's pretty cool how just a simple design like the men and women bathroom sign. I also, didn't even realize how the male picture is only male if a female sign is in place. But other wise if the female sign is not present the male sign becomes people sign.

After reading the article the first thing that popped into my head was restroom signs and other signs like them. I really never thought how simple a picture can be but can hold some important information. Plus, its universal you can be from a totally different country but if you saw a sign with an airplane silhouette you would think airport or a place where airplanes are at.

I came across this modern hieroglyph while cruising the web of google. Even though this is not a common sign like a fork and a knife to symbolize eating food but its pretty simple to figure out what it is saying. I can clearly see that there is no peeing on the ground or oral pleasure in the bathroom. I also thought it was funny because the incident had to have happen a lot in order for a sign to have to be put up.

The font I decided to use was Star Avenue. I generally like the simplistic of the font but also the unneeded extends of the curves.

Understanding Comics

I found this piece of writing very interesting. I've had quite a connection between cartoons and comics and I guess I always image myself as those characters. When first reading this article I never really thought about different types of comics, I just never really thought about it. But when I think back on it their are tons of different types of comics. Ranging from Garfield to Marvel to Manga. I really like the idea for a cartoony detail for the people or characters with a detail background was really awesome looking.

When I first saw the title "Understanding Comics" I instantly thought of Marvel Comics. I believe it to be one of the most famous comic book around. Just the incredible details in the background and into the characters really help me connect to the comic. Plus, with all the masks and secret identities really helps for the viewer to image him or herself as the characters.

Another comic that I thought of when I was reading the article was Garfield. It leans more over the side of Language and up towards the picture. But the comic is pretty simplistic and there's really not detail in the comic strip. But you can still figure out what the characters, objects, and the background are.

Typography for Children

When I first started to read this I never read thought about the text they used in children books. I just always thought that they put something that looks good. I didn't realize that it could be difficult for children to read it if it's all stylized. But it was strict for children books to have very visible words for children to be able to read them. But there were still a lot of children books with illustrated titles.

Charlotte's Web came to mind when I was thinking about books with illustrated titles. I love how the whole title is covered in webbing. Also, the spider hanging down from the beginning of the title was a nice touched.

One children book series that did very well and still had a normal typography was the Dr. Seuss books. I didn't realize it but almost all of the book covers of Dr. Seuss' titles are very readable and had barely no illustration done with them. It's crazy because a lot of Dr. Seuss books have some crazy illustration art work in it but yet all the titles are normal lettering.
